MRS. DONALD A. (Ruth Fangman) HEARN

DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Mrs. Ruth Hearn, 68, of Independence, formerly of Dyersville, died of cancer Wednesday morning, Jan. 29, 2003 at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald, officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, where there will be a rosary recited at 3 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. Friday.

She was born on Aug. 12, 1934, in Dyersville, daughter of William J. and Rita C. (Milbert) Fangman.

She graduated from Ryan (Iowa) High School, and received a teaching certificate from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids. She taught school for several years in the Winthrop area.

She married Donald A. Hearn on June 23, 1956, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Monti. The couple made their home in Independence, where they owned and operated Cy & Charley's Tire & Appliance Center.

She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Sew & Sew Club, Peoples Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Chautauqua Literary Club. She volunteered many hours to St. John's Catholic School, and the Peoples Memorial Hospital.

Surviving are three children Sue (David) Bruch, of Waterloo, Ron (Brenda) Hearn, of Independence, and Joseph (Trisha) Hearn, of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Hayleigh and Anna Bruch, both of Waterloo, and Cy and Sydney Hearn, of Independence; a sister, Eunice Mahoney, of Independence; three brothers, Dan Fangman, of Masonville, Richard Fangman, of Winthrop, and Dr. John Fangman, of Edina, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don Hearn, on Jan. 1, 1997; a sister, Rosemary Offerman; and a brother, Bill Fangman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Ruth A. Hearn family, in care of Reiff Funeral Home, 216 Third Ave., SE, Independence, Iowa 50644.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Cedar Valley Hospice, Buchanan County Site and the staff of St. John's Catholic Church, and all of her friends for all of their wonderful care, support and compassion shown during her illness.
