MELANCHOLY CASE OF DROWNING. – On Tuesday afternoon, June 28, says the Herald, young man named Mark A. Smith, while bathing at the lower Seventh street bridge, was drowned. He went in the water in company with a young man. He ventured out some thirty feet from the shore, was caught in an eddy, and being but an indifferent swimmer, he was drawn under. His own and the cries of his companion for help alarmed some of the workmen at the mill, and they made every possible effort to render him assistance, but in vain.

Mr. Smith is from New York. He taught school at Epworth last winter, and was well known and respected there. For some weeks he had been studying at the Commercial College. He was a young man of much promise and one who’s quiet, gentle manner won the esteem of all who knew him. He has a brother living at Cottonville, in Jackson co., after whom a messenger was dispatched last evening. The rest of his relatives live in New York.

The body was found about 10 o’clock next morning. An inquest was held and a verdict given in accordance with the above facts.
