Dubuque Herald
Mary 24th 1855

Died- In this city on the 21st inst in the 60th year of his age, Thomas McCraney Esq., leaving a wife and children to mourn the loss of one of the best of husbands and one of the kindest and indulgent of Fathers. Mr. McCraney was widely known in the State of Iowa having been a rsident of Dubuque since 1832 until his late removal to Clayton County. He built the first house ever erected in the now city of Dubuque and settled the first white family on this side of the river above Keokuk. He frequently occupied places of honor and trust by the choice of the peole, and discharged the duties of the same with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of his constituents. He was a member of the first general assembly of the Territory of Wisconsin in which Iowa was then included and was elected one of the delegates to form our State Constitution. And in all his public life was ever the friend of the people and a warm advocate for their rights and liberties. He is regretted by a large circle of friends. And especially the old residents of Dubuque offer their sympathies and condolence to the bereaved family in this their hour of trial in Delaware County N.Y. where many of his relatives live.
