I translated the following obituary from the Dubuque National Demokrat, a German-language newspaper published in Dubuque, Iowa between about 1856 and 1932. The obituary was originally published on 16 October 1867.

Death of Titus Schmid

The report of the death of Mr. Titus Schmid will be greatly troubling to all who knew him. He died last Saturday morning after a short illness. Just a few days earlier, he was taking care of his business as usual, and no one was prepared for such a quick end. Mr. Schmid was born in Donsdorf, Wuerttemberg, on January 2, 1816, and thus was 51 years old. He came to America in 1856 and settled first in Cincinnati, and then in Harrison, Ohio. He then brought his family over from Germany in 1853 and settled in Dubuque, where he initially rented Heeb’s Brewery with Mr. Scherr. After a few years he went into partnership with Messrs. Scherr and Beck and built their own brewery, which soon acquired a good reputation. On account of his kindheartedness and cheerfulness, Mr. Schmid was very well liked by all who knew him, and his death will be deeply mourned by numerous friends. The vast funeral procession that accompanied him to his final rest is sufficient indication of the respect that was accorded the deceased. Peace to his ashes!
