Steven R. Behr

Steven R. Behr, 60, of 4487 Dodge St., formerly of 1005 Dunham Drive, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at home following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 9, 1947, in Dubuque, son of Irwin "Irv" and Lorraine (Hein) Behr. He married Dianne M. (Nicks) Jones on May 3, 1980, at St. Mary's Church in Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Feb. 10, 2001.

Steve's life revolved around construction and carpentry. He started at the age of 16 working for Mark Strub Construction and later established the Steve Behr Construction Co. Steve was lastly employed by Gronen Restoration and was the project manager restoring downtown Dubuque. He was truly a creative craftsman; restoring old buildings was his passion.

Steve was a member of the Key City Corvette Club and the Dubuque Homebuilders Association.

He enjoyed cooking, gardening, tinkering with his Corvette and decorating his home in holiday lights. Steve was a NASCAR fan and an avid and longtime Chicago Bears fan. Steve's greatest joy was to be with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, Jason J. (Angie) Jones, of Marion, Iowa; three daughters, Jennifer J. (Nick) Schwartz and Amber M. (Matt Wenzel) Behr, both of Dubuque, and Brandie M. (B.J.) Knockel, of La Motte, Iowa; two grandchildren, Amaya and Olivia Schwartz; a sister, Mary Jo (Dick) Weitz, of Dubuque; a brother, Richard J. (Paula) Behr, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Bob (Mary) Park, of Dubuque; nieces and nephews; and special friend, Maryann Beecher, of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Pamela Park.

In lieu of flowers, a Steven R. Behr Memorial Fund has been established.
