Joseph H. Schumacher, 87, of 3235 Lake Ridge Drive, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Private family services will be at 5 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road. There will be a private family burial at Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Schumacher was a method set-up man at John Deere Dubuque Works for 30 years before retiring in 1977.

He was born May 14, 1920, in Adrian, Minn., son of Joseph Henry and Irma (Gerken) Schumacher. He was a Dubuque resident since 1925. He married Vera Preu in 1947 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, in Dubuque. Joseph was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School.

Joseph was in the Army Engineers during World War II, stationed in Germany, where he met Vera Preu.

He enjoyed woodworking and built four family homes. Joseph also was an avid bowler and enjoyed gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Vera, of Dubuque; four children, Nora (Scott) Gill, of Boise, Idaho, Joseph Anthony (Nancy) Schumacher, of St. Paul, Minn., Kenneth (Marie) Schumacher, of Cave Creek, Ariz. and Marilyn (Donald) Campbell, of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother, Francis (Ethel) Schumacher, of Dubuque; two sisters, Marian Frederick, of Dubuque and Doris Hanten, of Dyersville; a sister-in-law, Patricia Schumacher; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Walter, Ervin, Charles and David Schumacher; and two sisters, Sister Mary Irma and Sally Pauly.

The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to the nurses and staff on the fourth floor of Finley Hospital.
