EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. -- Mary Kathryn Gabel Hingtgen, 75, of 60 N. Frentress Lake Road, East Dubuque, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 at home, of ovarian cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Raphael's Cathedral, with Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, where the parish scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m.

Mary K. was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Remsen, the daughter of George A. and Josephine C. (Schmidt) Gabel. Mary K. and Robert L. Hingtgen married Jan. 28, 1956, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Mary graduated from the former Immaculate Conception Academy in 1950, and worked in the offices of the Dubuque Packing Co. until starting a family. She was a stay-at-home mom until the couple's five children were in school and then worked at East Dubuque Savings Bank as a loan secretary for 13 years, after which she went to work at WCB Communications, Inc., in the Religious Ed division (Brown Roa) and later known as Harcourt, until her retirement.

Mary was an active member of St. Raphael's Parish as a sacristan, Eucharist minister, and visited the homebound for many years. She also was a Eucharist volunteer at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque and helped serve the noon meals at the city mission.

Mary was an active member and past president of the Immaculate Conception Academy Alumnae Association. She enjoyed lunch with her high school classmates, and meeting with her bridge clubs each month. She and her husband enjoyed biking on the flood wall and Heritage Trail and walking the River Walk, as well as their involvement in the Laff program at Loras College and meeting with friends for coffee afterward.

After their children were grown, she and Bob enjoyed traveling to visit them and their grandchildren frequently and the many trips their children would take them on.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L.; sons Nicholas R. (Jodi), of Cary, N.C., and their children, Nathan, Savannah, Zack and Ethan; Robert J. (Annie), of San Diego, and their son, Gavin; daughters Kathy (David) Stevers, McKinney, Texas, and their children, Haley and Michael; Anne (Lt. Col. Martin J.) Holland, Springfield, Va., and their children, Erin and Christopher; and Sarah (Cliff) Goldthorpe, Fullerton, Calif., and their baby to be born in spring; three sisters, Shirley Shireman and Marlene (Gerald) Hird, both of Dubuque, and Dolores Ryan, of Lone Tree, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Joseph Deckert, Dan (Dorothy) Hingtgen, Cedar Rapids; and sisters-in-law, Joy (Ron) Willging, St. Joseph, Mich., and Fay (Don) Gancsos, Burton, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by here parents, George and Josephine Gabel; her sister, Myrt Deckert; brothers-in-law, Ray Shireman and Ray Ryan; her in-laws, Leo and Pauline Hingtgen; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Marge Hingtgen, and a niece, Sheryl (Ed) Kruse, and nephews, James Ryan and Thomas Deckert.
