WORTHINGTON, Iowa -- LeRoy E. Schemmel, 77, of Worthington, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, after failing to recover from bypass surgery.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Don Hertges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where a parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.

He was born on May 28, 1930, in Worthington, son of Ben A. and Rose Mary (Billmeyer) Schemmel. He was raised on the Schemmel family homestead and farmed with his brother, Bernard, over the past 50 years, raising beef cattle.

LeRoy served in the Army during the Korean War.

LeRoy enjoyed farming and tractors. He loved participating in tractor parades and had a prized collection of antique tractors. He was a huge Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears fan.

Surviving are his brother, Bernard, of Worthington; two sisters, Pearl Recker and Jean Mormann, both of Dyersville, a sister-in-law, Gladys Schemmel; a brother-in-law, Vernon (Madonna) Gudenkauf; 20 nieces and nephews, and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leo; a sister, Marion Gudenkauf; and a brother-in-law, Gerald Recker.
