Virgil R. Nemmers

BELLEVUE, Iowa -- Virgil R. Nemmers, 79, of Bellevue, died suddenly Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, as a result of a boating accident in Branson, Mo.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bellevue, with the Rev. Scott Bullock officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the church, where there will be a prayer service at 2:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The Kingery-Lemke Funeral Home & Crema-tion Services, Bellevue, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nemmers retired from Moorman Mfg Co., Quincy, Ill. He currently was a bus driver for the Bellevue Community Schools.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1928, in St. Donatus, son of Joe and Irene (Davis) Nemmers. He married Algean Berthel on July 18, 1953, at St. John's Catholic Church, Andrew.

Virgil graduated from Loras Academy. He served with the Army from 1951 to 1953, receiving a Purple Heart during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Bellevue Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 273 and had been a volunteer for many events including 33 years as an EMT with the Bellevue Ambulance Service. He also was a member of the Jackson County Veteran Affairs.

His greatest joy was being at the cabin with his family and friends.

Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Algean; his children, Larry (Deb), Duane, Mary Beth (Rick) Michels, all of Bellevue, and Joe (Judy), of Asbury; his brothers, Alvin (Bev), of Sherrill, and Loras (Lois), of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Leota Nemmers, of Dubuque; a brother-in-law, Dale Wilming, of Dubuque; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darrell; two brothers, Robert and Joseph; and a sister, Shirley Wilming.
