OBITUARY
Farmers market mainstay killed in wreck Iowa native Jan Mary Kaune moved to Texas with her husband 26 years ago.

Jan Mary Kaune, 51, a fixture at the Austin Farmers Market on Saturdays, died Thursday night when her sport-utility vehicle flipped into a water-filled ditch, her sister-in-law Traci Sosa said.

Kaune was driving her Mitsubishi SUV home on FM 973 in northeastern Travis County when she veered off to the right and overcorrected, sending her vehicle into a ditch, Texas Department of Public Safety officials said. The wreck happened near 12200 Walton Hill Pass, northeast of Manor. Kaune died at the scene.

Emergency officials said it was unclear how long the vehicle had been in the ditch.
Kaune, a native of Dubuque, Iowa, moved to Texas with her husband, Brant, 26 years ago. They operated Kaune Line Farms for several years until he died of a sudden illness in July 2006, Sosa said.

Since then, Kaune had been raising free-range chickens and caring for horses at her home in Coupland. In recent years, Sosa said, Kaune sold her chickens at the Austin Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Since the death of her husband, Sosa said, Kaune was subject to long periods of sadness.
"The only thing about her death that makes me feel good is that she's with my brother," she said.
