Oswald J. Holz

Oswald Joseph "Ozzie" Holz, 81, of 1230 Lincoln Ave., died at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Holz was formerly employed as a mechanic at Bird Chevrolet. He then worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1982.

He was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Dubuque, son of Oswald W. and Clara (Krohn) Holz. He married Eileen M. Bemis on July 30, 1948, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 1992.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific.

Ozzie was a former member of the Amvets.

He looked forward to the annual deer hunting trip to northern Wisconsin. He also was a fisherman in his earlier days and was the neighborhood handyman. He enjoyed being "the cook."

Surviving are a daughter, Linda A. (Richard) Cathman, of Dubuque; a son, David J. (Bev) Holz, of Dubuque; two grandsons, Jamie J. and Danny K. Holz, both of Dubuque; a sister, Tabitha Wiedenbacher, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Anita, and her husband, Richard Bertling; a brother, LeRoy, and his wife, Kay Holz; and a brother-in-law, Ray Wiedenbacher.

An Oswald J. Holz Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the fifth floor at The Finley Hospital and all of Ozzie's friends and neighbors for their care and concern for Ozzie and his family.
