Florence R. "Billie" Bemis

Florence R. "Billie" Bemis, 86, of 1688 Drexel Ave., formerly of 2547 Windsor Ave., died at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, of natural causes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church, where there will be a parish wake service at 2 p.m. Friends also may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

Mrs. Bemis worked at Stampfers Department Store for 37 years until her retirement.

She was born on May 30, 1920, in Sherrill, Iowa, daughter of Peter G. and Edwina (Hirsch) Nauman. She married Milton Bemis on Feb. 6, 1940, in Sherrill; he preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 2004.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Rosary Society. She also was an Archdiocesean Council of Catholic Women member.

In her spare time, Florence enjoyed playing golf, cards and spending time with her family.

She was known for her homemade pies served at the Carriage House Cafe.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria (Ronald) Markus, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Angela Brandel, Gregg (Debbie) Brandel, Tom (Laurie) Brandel, Gary Brandel and Glenn (Riza) Brandel; 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters, six stepgrandchildren, 11 stepgreat-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandsons; a brother, Charles "Whitey" (Delores) Nauman, of Dubuque; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Dorothy Linden and Stella Engler; and five brothers, Ray, Vi, Dick, Clarence and Cletus.
