Zwingle Shooting Scrap
Wednesday night, Jan. 2nd, August Fischer, a saloon keeper in Zwingle, shot Joseph Welty, who was amusing himself by pelting rocks at the former’s place of business. Fischer warned Welty to desist but no attention was paid to his requests or commands, and Welty, assisted and egged on by another man and a woman kept up the annoyance until the saloon keeper fired several shots. One took effect in Welty’s head. The bullet entered the face to the side of the eye and fractured the bone and coming to the surface followed along the skull under the skin to the back of the ear, where it deflected and shot down to the base of the skull and lodged in the neck. The skull was not injured nor were any blood vessel ruptured. At last report the wounds were in a healthy condition and Welty’s speedy recovery is assured.
Fischer went to Dubuque and gave himself to Sheriff Phillips.
