NEW TOW BOAT

The new steam tow boat Van Sant arrived here Friday night and left here Saturday morning for Reed’s Landing. She was built last winter by the owners Messrs. Van Sant & Son, at LeClaire and is the most improved model, and built expressively for towing. The length of her hull is 110 feet, width of beam 21 feet, with 16 foot stern wheel. She has two poppet value engines, 12 inch cylinder and four foot stroke, built expressively at the famous Niles & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. They are set up and are now engineered by Mr. Henry Whitmore, one of our well-known river engineers. The steam boiler is 24 feet long, 44 inches in diameter, with 10 hues* six inches in diameter, and was manufactured in this city by Wm. Marshall. The boat is commanded by Captain Van Sant and is calculated to do good work, as she attained the speed of nine to ten miles per hour up stream.

•The type of this newspaper was blurred at this point, so I’m not sure if “hues” Is correct.
