Assault With a Knife and Hammer

Yesterday afternoon John Herbslep, who lives near the fairgrounds, went to the house of a neighbor, Wm. Hemelben, an old, weak man, with whom he had had some misunderstandings, and was on bad terms. Some unpleasant words passed between them, when the old man started to go out of the house. Herbslep locked the door, and then drew a knife form his pocket with which he attached the old man, cutting three or four bad wounds in his face and forehead. The old man had a hammer in his hand which he intended to use to nail some boards, and his assaulter snatched this from him and struck him a couple of blows upon the head with it and then left. He was taken in charge and brought to the calaboose. A warrant was issued by Justice Hoerner in the evening, on the complaint of the old man’s wife, and the merits of the case will probably be heard today.
