Extract of letter from the Sac and Fox Agency, Nov. 17, 1839

A party of Sac and Fox Indians, headed by Pash-a-pa-ho, (the old war chief), struck a party of Winnebago’s, killed forty-seven and took one prisoner. The Sac and Fox went out this fall to hunt, but I learn from stragglers that come in from time to time, that most of the young men have left the hunt and gone to war. Keokuk and Appanoose are each of them out at the head of parties in search of Sioux.
