“STORMING THE BASTILE”
Our New Sheriff Sensibly and Suitably Surprised
Last evening, about 9 o’clock, a crowd of about four hundred people assembled at the corner of Ninth and Clay Streets, and headed by the Germania Band and marched in double file to the Sheriff’s residence, which has recently been taken possession of by the new officer, Mr. Ferring. Arriving at the home, the Germania Band played an overture, then a waltz, and “Then You’ll Remember Me.” This brought the sheriff out, and Hon. T. Crawford thereupon introduced him to the crowd, and the crowd to him. Mr. Ferring responded with much feeling, thanking his friends for the honor of such an extensive visit, and invited them to walk in and make themselves at home. The residence being directly connected with the jail, of course a great many of the visitors felt more at home on the inside than the outside, and consequently the assembly was a very social one. The principal exercises consisted of talking and dancing, interspersed with eating and drinking. Everybody shook hands with the new sheriff, and judging from the manner in which he blushed from the crown of his head to the most cherished corn on either foot, we are of the opinion that he will speedily become a very popular officer, especially among the ladies.
At 10 o’clock the prisoners were sent to bed, and the hall of the jail converted into a dancing room, where a very happy time is in progress as we write.
