The Iowa Iron Works of Dubuque has commenced work on the new torpedo boat ordered by Secretary Tracy some time ago. The model has been finished, and work will be commenced on the hull at once. All supercilious weight will be dispensed with, and the 2,000 horse power engine with which the craft is to be fitted will drive it at a high speed. The model shows the finest lines ever built after on the Mississippi River. The runs forward and aft are sharp, and they turn on the bilge with an easy graceful curve, denoting the minimum amount of friction in passing through the water. As the boat is to draw five feet of water with machinery and fuel on board, she does not have the dead rise amid ship usual to seagoing craft, and gives rise to greater complication in gaining the best speed hues.
