River News
A very remarkable occurrence took place near La Crosse on Christmas day. Late in the fall the steamer Helen Marr of the McDonald Line, was caught in the ice near Winona with a half-raft of logs belonging to the Gem City Lumber Co. of Quincy, and they were not able to get it into safe quarters. But the recent warm weather opened the river up so that on Christmas evening Capt. McDonald sent a crew up after the boat and raft and it was landed in Black River safely Christmas day at 4 o’clock. They were just in time, as the cold weather commenced that afternoon, as the ice was running thick in the river next morning.
