BARGES OF SHELLS
~
Harvey Chalmers & Sons Paid Out
Big Sum for Raw Material
~
Two big barges loaded with clam shells were anchored this morning at the levee for Harvey Chalmers & Son, the new pearl button factory. The barges were towed down the river by the steamer “Monarch,” which is almost constantly employed by shell towing. An idea of what clam shells can cost can be taken form the fact that Harvey Chalmers & Co. paid $2,500 for the supply they received today. Everything is moving along nicely in the building to be used by the factory and in about a month work in shell cutting will begin. The gentlemen connected with the new industry complain that they find difficulty in landing at the levee as the shore is covered with hard wood. The city council should see that the levee is not transformed into a wood yard, they say.
