Dubuque Democratic Herald – Sept. 11, 1863

Discharging Firearms. – Mr. Editor: You would render a service to the many readers of your paper if you would call attention of the proper authorities of the dangerous practice, resorted to of late, of firing loaded guns in the city, without paying the respect to persons or property. Three panes of glass were broken this morning in one dwelling house, on three different sides of the same, and two in another house, the residence of a widowed lady. Not less than one hundred shots were fired this morning, and whilst it is no doubt right and proper for the valiant S. B. Union Leaguers and other peace-preserving and mob-allaying Unionist to perfect themselves, by practice, to the use of the muskets placed in their hands, free of costs and an abundance of ammunition, by our vigilant , discreet and vigilant Governor, still , it is dangerous to those citizens who do not believe in arming one portion of the people with the miserable pretext of keeping the other in order and in awe of the Conscription Act. The dwelling that received these shots this morning is occupied by what abolitionist term copperheads. The other by a Union {?) widow. PRECAUTION
