Dubuque Democratic Herald – Sept. 11, 1863

Importation of Sheep – A large drove of sheep, numbering not far from a thousand, passed through the city yesterday for the interior of the state, having been brought in from the east. It is stated by those posted in the manner that there has never been a season when more sheep had been imported into Iowa than the present. The high price of wool for the last year has turned the attention of farmers more to the raising of sheep than ever before, and, as a consequence, we find that though large numbers are purchased, very few are slaughtered or sent out of the state. Iowa is destined in time to be one of the best wool states, not only of the West, but of the whole country.
