THE BRIDGE LOCATION
~
The city council has appropriated $200 to pay the expenses of Gen. G. W. Jones, who is sent to Washington to endeavor to induce the secretary of war to locate the bridge across the river in the vicinity of the present railroad bridge. A wagon bridge is greatly needed here, and if we have one at all it should be not far from the present bridge. Heretofore, the present bridge company has opposed a bridge either upon their own structure or in its immediate vicinity. It is to be hoped they no longer oppose such a great improvement as such a bridge would be to the city, and that they would lend their aid to Gen. Jones to secure the permission he desires. There is little doubt that the Secretary of War would at once locate the bridge as desired by the people of Dubuque, if the existing bridge company would cooperate in the matter.
