The Herald, Tuesday, June, 8, 1869

In a Mineral Hole – Last Sunday, a little girl about nine years old, a daughter of Mr. Conkling, while playing or walking in the vicinity of Col. Thomas’ residence, (formerly known as the Yates place) north of 14th Street, fell into a mineral hole thirty feet deep. She set up unearthly yelling, and was soon found. After nearly a half an hours delay, a ladder was procured, and a rope tied to that and the ladder let down the hole; then a man descended, and rescued the child, terribly frightened, and somewhat hurt, showing bruises about the breast and sides. It was a narrow escape. The child will probably not venture within an inch and a half of the edge of a mineral hole again for a week.
