Sixth Feeney Brother Now In Service

Patrick Feeney Of Bernard Adds Sixth Star To Service Flag As Youngest Enlists

Mr. and Mrs. Patrick W. Feeney of Bernard have added a sixth star to their service flag, their youngest son, Robert, enlisted in the naval reserve last week. Robert, who was graduated from Garryowen High School last June, has four brothers in the navy, and one in the army, all overseas. Their sister, Mary, is also overseas, doing nursing work in a large hospital in Hawaii.

The first Feeney boys to enter armed service were William, ships fitter, 2-c, and Thomas, gunner’s mate, 1-c, both of whom were on duty at Peal Harbor, December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. Both are in the Pacific now. Joseph entered the army in July, 1941, and is now a first lieutenant serving in Italy with an ordinance unit.

Loras, electrician’s mate 2-c, went into the navy in 1942 and is now with the Atlantic fleet, while Paul, hospital assistant 2-c, is in the New Hebrides Islands, having joined the navy in 1943.

The seventh brother, Harold, is serving in the home front, managing the Feeney farm, near Bernard. He was employed in Maquoketa at the Holtz yards before taking over farm work. All of the boys who are overseas receive the Community Press.
