Correspondence of the Dubuque Times regarding Samuel J. Kirkwood, Republican candidate for Governor.

Cedar Falls, Iowa
July 26, 1859

It may seem presumptuous in an entire stranger to address you as a correspondent, but my desire to correct a statement now going the rounds of the Democratic party of the State, is the only excuse I have to offer for my boldness. The article to which I refer says: S. J. Kirkwood is a broken down lawyer; that he was compelled to leave the Buckeye State for want of business; that he did not possess the confidence of the people of his own county, &c. Now I can conscientiously pronounce all such assertions base falsehoods.

Being a citizen myself of Ohio, and somewhat acquainted with Mr. Kirkwood, I know that he possessed the entire confidence of the people of his county: that he was not compelled to leave the State for want of business and as to his being a “broken down lawyer,” his election for two terms to the office of Prosecuting Attorney is sufficient proof that he was a successful lawyer.

One of his old neighbors told me a few days since, that he was esteemed highly as a citizen, lawyer and friend; and though he could not have the pleasure of voting for him for Governor, he should pray for his election daily. And as this gentleman felt, so feel all of his old acquaintances in Ohio, even to his Democratic acquaintances.
