Louis A. Schemmel was born April 12, 1871 at Worthington, Iowa, son of Anton “Anthony” and Josephine (Hopply) Schemmel. He received his education in the Worthington rural schools. Louis married Julia May on April 5, 1896, in Dyersville. Julia was born in Dyersville on July 29, 1874, the daughter of Herman and Sophia Campbell May. After their marriage the Schemmel’s farmed in rural Farley. Julia died on July 26, 1966. Louis died May 21, 1970. They had four children; Anthony, Clarence, Florence Hawkins, and LaVern Ryder Heiden.
