David W. Armstrong 1877-1954

David W. Armstrong, son of James and Martha Armstrong, pioneers of Dyersville, was born in Farley, Iowa March 12, 1877. He was graduated the Dyersville public schools and graduated from high school in Dyersville in 1895. He later took a business course in Bayless Business School in Dubuque. He entered the lumber business establishment by his father and upon incorporation of the firm in 1905, he became the secretary-treasurer. James Armstrong bad David Armstrong were the only father-son combination who ever served the Dyersville community as mayors. James served in 1887 and David served from 1906-1914. David Armstrong was also influential in organizing the Dyersville Commercial Club and was a charter member.

On Sept. 20, 1905, he married Mabel Leigh, daughter of pioneers, Charles E. and Martha Leigh. They built the home at the N.E. corner of 3rd avenue and Fifth Street and resided there all their lives. There were two sons: David Leigh, born October 4th, and James Robert born April 6th, 1909. James Armstrong succeeded his father in the Armstrong lumber company and resides in Dyersville on 7th Ave. S.E.
