Cascade Pioneer, Cascade, Iowa, Friday, Morning, March 1st, 1895

The shooting of Professor Miller’s son by Farmer Hess at Luxemburg in this county, on the 16th was a most deplorable affair. Prof. Miller had made arrangements to attend the teachers’ meeting at Dyersville. He had borrowed a friend’s cutter the day before and as he wished to get an early start he took the cutter to the barn of his nearest neighbor, Peter Hess, and at 5 o’clock Saturday morning went to get it. He was accompanied by his fourteen year old son. Hess heard them in the yard and, as he claims, mistaking them for burglars fired upon them with a shot-gun, the whole charge taking effect in young miller’s neck and shoulder. The act of Hess is considered fool-hardy and thoughtless, as he knew Mr. Miller intended calling for the cutter at that time and on that morning.
