End of an Era

The Avalon, the country’s last tramping excursion steamboat, ties up at Dubuque Municipal Landing the afternoon of Tuesday, July 18, 1961. Later, 1,147 boarded for a three hour afternoon excursion to Nine Mile Island and back. That evening the steam wheelers ballroom decks hosted 600 passengers for a Moonlite excursion dance. The Avalon also ran charter excursions, and it was regularly hired for Roshek’s Department Store employee events. On August 3rd the Avalon returned to Dubuque for another excursion, but due to financial trouble Steamer Avalon Inc. ceased its operation at the end of the season. The boys in the foreground are cousins are Earl Sawvel, left and Jack Sawvel
