ILLINOIS, REINDEER

The Illinois was built in Dubuque in 1888, when she was called the Reindeer. The vessel sank in 1894 and was raised, but by 1901 she was in such bad shape that she was rebuilt in Quincy, Ill. Renamed the Illinois, the vessel was operated by the Illinois Fish Commission until 1913. The conclusion of the commission’s ownership coincided with the governor learning that several of his political cronies had been caught with women with questionable reputations. Under a new ownership during Prohibition, the vessel was said to be a floating distillery. Fire destroyed the boat under mysterious circumstances on Sept. 30, 1930.
