The Clyde was the first big iron hulled steamboat to come out of William Hopkins’ Iowa Iron Works of Dubuque (later known as Dubuque Boat & Boiler Works). Built in 1870 as a sidewheeler, the boat was converted to a sternwheeler, as shown here. During its 70’s plus service, the Clyde piled the Mississippi, Illinois and Tennessee rivers.
