Anton B. Mescher 1884-1975

Anton B. Mescher was born July, 1884 and died June 23, 1975. Anton was the grandson of one of the early settlors by the name of Tobias Mescher who was born in Oldenburg, Germany. His father’s name was Frank and he was born in 1848 in the Mescher homestead west of New Vienna. Anton married Mary Sandman on November 4, of 1908 and she died in November of 1944, at the age of 55. They were the parents of twelve children, Herbert, Vincent, Raymond, Allen, Edwin, Elmer, Donald, Bob, Alma (Mrs. James Healy), Rose (Mrs. Moe Johanningmeir), Laura (Mrs. Ed. Meiers), and Arlene (Mrs. Dick Southwell). He received his education in the New Vienna Schools. After reaching manhood he was a carpenter in Bancroft for a time and returned to New Vienna in time to open Mescher Bros. General Merchandise Store in 1904 with his brother Henry. They operated the store until 1919 selling it to Frank Buenker. He then began the automobile repair business and Chevy car sales. In the late 30’s, he became a J. I Case farm implement dealer until World War II when machinery was no longer available. He served on the City Council and was City Treasurer for 43 years while also serving as the Vice-president of the New Vienna Mutual Insurance Co. for 51 years. He was 90 years old at the time of his death.
