Dillon, Lyman. (Born NY, June 12, 1800 - Died Cascade, IA, Dec. 8, 1857). Established the path of the Military Road. When Congress appropriated $20,000 for a military road from Dubuque to the capital in Iowa City, the contract was awarded to the Langworthy brothers. They subcontracted it to Dillon. Although the route was laid out by an army
engineer named Tilghman, it was Dillon using five oxen to plow the path who is remembered. Dillon came to Cascade in 1836 and purchased a mill from the Delong brothers north of the city. He operated the business for many years in addition to farming. Dillon served on the Dubuque County Board of Supervisors from October 1847 to August 1851.
