Hubert Achen, son of Mathias & Maria (Kopchen) Achen, was born in Mettendorf, Germany. He came to the US in 1858 & in 1861 enlisted as a solider in the Civil War. He returned to Prussia & in 1862 brought his bride, Maria Werner, dau. of John G. & Margaret Werner, born in Rohl, Rhine Province, Prussia, to the US. Shortly after they arrived Maria & Hubert married in Dubuque on 6-30-1862. They purchased a farm in South Fork Twp. in 1883 where they spent the rest of their lives. Children: Catherine, Margaret, John; Susan; Anna; Peter; Christopher; Jacob; Mame; Hubert & Paul.
