Robert Waller Passes Away at a Ripe Old Age
Mr. Robert Waller died at half past 1 o'clock this morning at his home at Key West, aged 77 years. Death was due to a wasting away of the vital forces.

Robert Waller was born in Swaledale, Yorkshire, England, in 1822, and came to this country with his parents when only eleven years of age, having been a resident of Dubuque for about sixty-two years, his father being the late Richard Waller, who died at an advanced age, about twelve years ago. Soon after arriving here his father established a smelting furnace, and Robert worked at the furnace and at mining for many years. He then turned his attention to farming, and was eminently successful both as a miner and as a farmer. He accumulated considerable property in the city and country, being the owner of a block on Locust, between First and Second street, and in other parts of the city. Fourteen years ago he retired from active business and spent his declining years in ease, enjoying the fruits of an honest and industrious life. His wife died twelve years ago. Her maiden name was Hannah Addyman and the fruit of their union was seven children – four girls and three boys – Mrs. Robert Cummings, of Alexandria, S.D.; Mrs. George Twaites, Mrs. Alexander McAleece and Mrs. J.R. Simpson; Thomas, Richard and James, all of whom survive him.

Mr. Waller was an energetic and progressive citizen – a man whose word was as good as his bond, and whose long life record in Dubuque is without a blemish. His death makes another break in the ranks of the pioneers of Dubuque and he passes away respected by all who knew him.
