SHOOTING AFFRAY ON
THE ALEX MITCHELL
~
A Davenporter Supposed to Be
Fatally Wounded
~
On Friday, while the steamer Alexander Mitchell was on the down trip near, Bad Axe City, forty miles this side of LaCrosse, a shooting affray occurred on board the steamer which will probably result fatally , and it all came about through a couple of gamblers. A passenger from Davenport, a name our informant did not get, was standing near the gamblers, and noticed that one was cheating, and the other seemed to be a verdant in his toils. The Davenporter informed the captain, and the captain came to break up the game. Meanwhile the men had got into trouble over the cheating, and the one who claimed to be cheated drew a revolver, and shot at his companion. The ball missed its aim, but struck the Davenporter, passing through his body. The ruffian then jumped from the boat and swam ashore, and although the boat landed and search was made, he could not be found. As his name is known, it is very likely yet that he may yet be overhauled and brought to justice. When the boat arrived here yesterday a surgeon was sent for to take care of the wounded man, he being then in a very low condition.
