SOME EXCITEMENT
~
A Storekeeper’s Attempt to Get
Payment for a Broken Pane
of Glass
~
Eighth Street, between Locust and Bluff Streets, was the scene of unusual excitement about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. A drunken man staggered along past Theopont Mueller’s store, fell against and smashed one of the large panes of glass alongside the door. Mr. Mueller was inside cutting up meat for pickling and rushed out with a huge knife in his hand. He is a very excitable old gentleman, and holding the knife over the drunken fellow insisted on immediate payment for the glass. But the poor unfortunate hadn’t ten cents and of course couldn’t pay, still Theopont held on, getting more excited every moment and flourishing the knife like a tragedian. Meanwhile several hundred people gathered roundabout. A policeman was sought in vain until finally Officer Sutton, off duty and on his way downtown, hove in sight. The crowd surged to either side as Paddy’s form loomed up, and he soon restored order. The drunk was taken, to the calaboose, but Mr. Mueller didn’t get the price of the glass.
