1877-1951. First Iowan to join the major league baseball clubs in the twentieth century. Buelow began his baseball career in 1897 with an independent club from Platteville, Wisc. During the following two years, he played with clubs from Freeport, ILL.; Rockford, ILL.; and Columbus, Ohio. Buelow played third base in 1900 for the Cleveland (Ohio) Blues of the American league, one year before the league was recognized officially. Sold at the end of the year to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Buelow was sold again to the Giants prior to the start of the 1901 season. A knee injury limited his playing time considerably. By 1902, he was back in the minor league playing in the Three-l League for Rockford. Between 1903-1905, Buelow played for Dubuque, leading the league in 1903 with a batting average of .400. Between 1906-1910, Buelow served as player-manager for a Peoria, ILL.; Evansville, Indiana; Clinton, IA; and Dubuque, Iowa. He attempted a comeback to the major leagues in 1912, but a knee problem ended his hopes.
