Many inquires have been made lately as to when the new Carneige-Stout Library will be opened to the public.

A number of persons have been under the impression that inasmuch as the trustees have been appointed and Messrs. Carneige and Stout have made good their promises, the library should be opened immediately to the public.

With a view of ascertaining that will be the earliest possible date when the public will have use of the library a reporter interviewed Jacob Rich, president of the Board of Directors. Mr. Rich said it will be some time yet before the public will have access to the library. At present, he said, the directors only have charge of Mr. Carneige’s donation of $50,000 which must be used exclusively for the purposes of construction. As yet no money has been received from taxpayers and therefore, he said, the public cannot reasonably expect to have access to the library’s benefits. But just as soon as the money has been taken from the city treasurer then people can look forward for recognition.

Mr. Rich stated the Board of Director will not receive any money from the city until January when the taxes would be collected. After that date, he said some provisions would probably be made so the public could have access to the library, but it was also probable, he said, that the directors would deem it wiser to keep the money received from the city in reserve as a sort of contingent fund until the library building is erected.
