BUSY DAY IN COURT
~
Justice Kessler Had Twenty Cases
in Police Court This morning
~
Justice Kessler had an array of twenty prisoners in police court, the greater number of them vagrants. Twelve of them were arrested yesterday afternoon in the notorious Van Emerson shack on the river front near the Star Brewery. They were engaged in shooting the “growlers” and having a general good time when a couple of the officers entered the place in search of a fellow who had stolen a caddy of tobacco from a store on Thirteenth Street. The crowd was so noisy that the officer sent for the patrol and carted then the entire bunch off to the police station. Squire Kessler sentenced the prisoners for terms ranging from 5 to 15 days of hard labor. Six plain drunks were sent down to sober up.
