By crawling stealthily out a second story window and creeping a distance of ten feet, James Mullen, a ten year old lad reached a telephone pole and escaped from the matrons’ quarters in the city hall, where he was “doing time” last night.

Mullen is one of the two youths who stole a jug of whiskey Thursday and got drunk on its contents. Yesterday he was sentenced by Justice Carney to spend twenty days with the matron.

The sentence did not please the youth and immediately after being incarcerated he commenced to plot and scheme to effect an escape. Last night about six o’clock he asked permission to go the closet. The permission was granted and the matron watched in vain for his return. After a while she decided to investigate but it was too late - the bird had flown.

As soon as he breathed the air of freedom again young Mullen rushed pell mell down the street to his home. “Mama I escaped” he shouted full of joy.

His mother, however, did not look with any favor on the lad’s escapado that she did on his former one, and taking him back by the nay of the neck she marshalled him back to the police headquarters, where she turned him over to the perturbed matron.

The police look upon the escape as a deed of daring.
