PONTOON

The Board of Engineers at Work

The board of engineers who were appointed to examine and report on the plans and specifications for the proposed pontoon bridge, visited both shores of the river yesterday, and made an official investigation of the localities selected for the bridge, under the escort of Dr. J. P. Quigley, General Jones, Mayor Cushing and several other prominent gentlemen. A vast deal of public interest has been felt in the coming of these engineers, which would have been undoubtedly been more substantially demonstrated yesterday had their arrival transpired in time to have received a more extended notice concerning their program here. Their arrival was announced and expected to take place some days ago, but the gentlemen failed to come to time until Thursday evening, at an hour too late to make more than a passing notice of their presence in this city. We have been unable to learn anything concerning the engineer’s ideas in relation to the pontoon. On that question their opinion is a sealed book, but while they are in our midst we should, perhaps, be neglecting the interests or wished of our citizens in withholding the universal sediment which all feeling concerning the successful carrying out of the pontoon project. But the engineers of course will make their report to the authorities at Washington according to the results of their investigation, uninfluenced by the wishes or opinions of the community, and the final action in regard to this most important and long agitated enterprise will be anxiously and hopefully looked forward to, involving as it does so much that it is in vital importance to the interest and prosperity of our city. The gentlemen will, if possible, take their departure to their respective homes today, failing in this they will visit the waterworks, some of our leading mines and other objects of interest in and about our city.
