Dubuque Herald, Jan. 4, 1873

INJURED BY A FALL – We regret to learn of a severe accident to Martin Canning, employed at St. Joseph’s Academy, corner of Main and 13th Streets. While adjusting a water spout he fell from the ladder and sustained injuries that will render him useless for weeks. Martin is a faithful and industrious man, the father of a large family upon who is misfortune will fall heavily, which it also does his friends and acquaintances, who sympathize with him.

Dubuque Herald, Jan. 5, 1873
NOT KILLED YET - Martin Canning can get well sooner than any other man we knew of. Yesterday we had him reported as injured from a fall, but before noon he entered the office as sound as ever. The report of his fall and injury was a myth, and the friends who came to console him, found the object of their sympathy shoveling snow and attending to his regular duties.
