AN AFFECTING INCIDENT – Among the parties calling on New Year’s Day was one consisting of Messrs. F. Hinds, H. W. Griswold, M. W. Smith, D. S. Wilson, W. L. Bradley, Wm. Andrew and J. K. Graves. Their card for calling was a peculiar one, it being a broken ring, with the names of the gentlemen encircling the ring, except where it was broken, about the eighth of the circumference, in which open space the name of J. K. Graves was printed differently from the others.

This all had a meaning, and it was this: This same lot of seven men had formed a New Year’s calling party for several years, with the exception of Mr. Graves. The other member was the late Hyde Clark, who died in October. The broken ring symbolizes his absence, and it certainly was a pretty thought that they should such silently but delicately refer to the loss their party sustained. The idea was a grateful tribute to the memory of him who had gone before and who was a thousand times remembered and spoken on New Year’s; and it was creditable to the remaining six that they should such remember their lost companion. Mr. Graves has been taken into the party in place of Mr. Clark.
