Dubuque Herald, July 4, 1872

SIGNS OF LOW WATER – It is a pretty certain sign of low water tide in the Mississippi when the dredge boats begin operation. Yesterday, two of these boats, the Montana and the Caffrey, passed this port upriver bound, with the dredging machine ready to clear obstructions from the channel. Capt. Throckmorton, commander of the fleet was aboard the Caffrey. The captain of the Montana, Jacob Harris, is a brother of Mr. Scribe Harris of this city; Mr. Wm. Dolson, the pilot, stopped off at this port on account of intelligence received of the shooting of his brother in Utah. The boats have been operating at Clinton and succeeded in removing a large tree and a dangerous snag from the channel.
