Dubuque Weekly Observer – July 15, 1854
FIRE – On Thursday night our city was illuminated by a blaze of light, flaming up from the river beyond the shore of the outer island – at first is was conjectured to be a steamboat on fire – and some said it was the water scoup Dredge (Geo. W. Jones) - but upon a closer examination it proved to be the more effective Dredge boat built by Mr. Hawley, and in the employ of the city. We regret its destruction - although it is “an ill will that blows nobody any good” and the only obstacle, perhaps, is now removed to a more permanent improvement of our harbor - and filling up, instead of digging out, will become the order of the day.
