THE RACE LAST EVENING
The five mile race at Clark's rink last evening attracted a large crowd. Tom Kelly and Ed Keas, two of Dubuque's fastest skaters, were matched against Frank Esterley, the fastest skater from Davenport. Messrs. A. B. Hudson, A. P. Quigley, Jr., and James McCoy were selected as the judges. Keas skated the first two and one-half miles against the champion. At the send off Keas pulled to the front but soon lost that position, and when his portion of the race was finished Esterley had gained two laps on him, the score being 59 to 57. Kelly then took the track for two and one-half miles, and skated 54 laps, while Esterley passed him three times and finished the race with 116 laps to Kelly and Keas 111 laps; time 22 minutes and 69 seconds. The audience cheered heartily and were greatly pleased with the speed and powers of endurance displayed by Esterley. He is a wonderful skater, and in a ten mile race with Gamble, the fastest skater in the United Sates, only lost the race by one-quarter of a lap. During his visit to Dubuque Mr. Esterley has proved himself to be a gentlemen and made many friends among the rink patrons.
