Dubuque Democratic Herald – Feb. 5, 1865

GREAT SLAUGHTER OF DOGS – The places that knew many a “purp” will know them no more, henceforth and forever, because they are gone dead. The greatest canine slaughter in this town is a man called Smith, who lives near Graham’s brick-yard. Yesterday morning he arose early and taking his gun went to a grove near his house and commenced a war on dogs. He began firing with precision and laid ten or more low. There was a promiscuous crowd, large Newfoundland’s that money couldn’t buy, spaniels, pointer, setters, “yellow” dogs, poodle dogs, bull dogs, curs &c., lay around loose, some shot in through the heart, others through the head, but none of them will ever trouble Smith again. There was dead dogs scattered throughout the neighborhood. One little “pet” came home with his nose shot off. To be serious, the residents are greatly exasperated at the outrage as many of them had dogs that money couldn’t buy.
