Dubuque Democratic Herald – Dec. 1, 1864

A SUCCESSFUL PILOT – Among the many pilots that navigate the river there are none more successful than Daniel McLain, of this city. In company with another he started for St. Louis with a raft of one million feet of lumber for Schulenberg & Co., of that city, and reached his destination safely and without any detention, arriving ahead of all the others, and was the only one who got through.
